ESPN anchor accuses Iggy of trying to kill hip-hop.

Iggy Azalea may be a bit of an easy target—dimply by being herself, she’s achieved that special kind of celebrity where she can simultaneously top the charts and get ripped on by basically anyone with a timeline.

But we’ve hit peak hate — that moment when people who shouldn’t be in the conversation have joined in just to get their digital high fives. That happened on ESPN on Sunday, when Sportscenter anchor Robert Flores decided to hop on a weeks-old story about Nick Young’s fear of dolphins to take a cheap shot at his girlfriend, Iggy.

“We learned that according to the Lakers’ Nick Young, a dolphin recently tried to kill him. So Nick, while dolphins are trying to kill you, your girlfriend is trying to kill hip-hop. Let’s call it even, OK?”

The reaction was like you’d expect. It was, basically, this:

To be fair, Iggy got wrecked, and her boyfriend, Lakers guard Nick Young — better known as Swaggy P — didn’t take kindly to it. Nor should he have: who the fuck is Robert Flores to riff on the sanctity of hip-hop? You know how Stuart Scott’s legacy was his ability to be fluidly mesh his love of hip-hop with sports journalism? This was not that.

Swaggy P took to Twitter to defend Iggy and effectively threaten Flores. “You job is to talk about sports not what me and my chick got going on,” he tweeted. “Im pretty sure we going to run into each other soon.”

Right gesture. Wrong move. Nick Young is a lot of things: A streaky shooter, a flashy dresser and a fascinating character. A wordsmith, he is not.

Flores responded. On the Sedano and Stink radio show, which is a real thing that exists, we checked, Flores shot back.

If you look at his numbers, there is a 70% chance that—if he takes a shot at me—he’s going to miss. I’m just looking at the numbers, so I’m good.

Again:

For non-basketball fans, here’s the joke. Nick Young, or “Swaggy P,” is a chucker in the strictest of senses. He can heat up, sure, but on the year he’s shooting 36%, which is well below the league average of 44%.

He also once did this:

And so like his jump shot, Young’s admittedly admirable attempt at defending his girlfriend has gone clank. [h/t Deadspin]
