Last we heard from Lauryn Hill she was owing more than $500,000 in unpaid taxes and had just a few days left to pay it back before jail time became a very real threat. But as the IRS assigned deadline of May 6th creeps nearer, Hill has reportedly avoided jail time thanks to a new hefty contract from Sony Music. According to AllHipHop, Sony's going to give Hill $1 million, which should help pay her debts with money to spare. The catch? She has to write 5 songs.

According to AllHipHop, Sony’s going to give Hill $1 million, which should help pay her debts with money to spare. The catch? She has to write 5 songs.

At about 100,000 a pop, that shouldn’t be hard for Hill, who was once considered to be the cream of the crop. The problem is, that “once” was back in 1998. In the years since she’s seemingly lost her mind with bizarre re-arrangements of her classic tracks to no-shows and ultra-late appearances at her gigs.

The talent’s still in there, that much we’re certain of. The question here is whether Sony made the right call on calling her bluff. For now, we’re calling theirs and calling this a legacy payout. To date, The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill has made them quite a pretty penny. Even if they don’t see any return on this money, we think they’ll keep their heads above water.
