One of hip-hop’s greatest storytellers is about to have his story told.

BET has just announced ordering a pilot of a new hour-long series titled Street Dreams which will focus on the life of legendary rapper Nasir ‘Nas’ Jones. Set in the early 90s, the show will follow “the ascent of Nas, a young man from the Queensbridge projects who will go on to become a famous rapper, as he evolves from young man to crack dealer to rapper to adult.” The pilot will be written and directed by Jonathan Levine, the man behind 50/50 and the tv series Rush.

This is actually Levine’s second swing at bring Street Dreams to the small screen – in 2014, the same project was announced in partnership with Xbox Live. While that version never came to fruition, BET is likely to be fully committed to the series following the massive success of another nostalgic music series, The New Edition Story. While there’s no word on Nas’ involvement in the new show, his involvement in the Xbox Live venture and recent success with The Get Down makes it pretty damn likely that he’ll be happy to get on board.
