The display blinks in time to Purple Rain.

Not to be outdone by Snoop in showing their love for Prince, one Minnesota family is paying tribute to the purple legend through Christmas lights. “Oh, yeah,” I hear you smirking, “what, they rigged up some rinky-dink set of purple lights and called it a day?” Try 10,000 purple lights, painstakingly arranged as a two-minute light show that’s set to Purple Rain, and a spinning love symbol.

The Staudt family holiday light show is a tradition that started three years ago, but this year’s edition is the first to include a tribute to Prince, for obvious reasons. “We’ve always been casual Prince fans, but his passing really hit us,” said chief light show architect Mike Staudt. “We regretted not taking advantage of having such an iconic star so close to us, and never attended any of the shows or concerts at Paisley.”

The light show is so emotionally stirring, the family says they’ve received a lot of praise from their neighbours, along with the regular noise complaints. “We’ve received compliments on this part of our show, and a few people have even mentioned it made them teary-eyed.”
