Trent Reznor promised new Nine Inch Nails by the end of 2016 and today, he delivered.

In December 2016, Trent Reznor promised “unfriendly, fairly impenetrable” new music before the end of 2016, and he’s finally making good on it with a new Nine Inch Nails EP, Not The Actual Events, which is being released digitally on Friday.

“Burning Bright (Field on Fire)” is the final song on the five-song release, and could certainly be described as “unfriendly”… I mean, more so than the average NIN track. Gritty, intense electronics wash over a heavy, drone-metal style bassline, and the end result sounds like Nadja playing with Dead Man’s Hill. It’s… fun! Listen for yourself below:

It appears that 2017 will be a bounty of new material for NIN fans, with the quadruple-vinyl release of Fragile: The Deviations 1, a “unique version” of the band’s landmark 1999 album with additional tracks and instrumentals. The Fragile will be the first of the band’s back catalogue to get a definitive re-release version, with Broken and The Downward Spiral set to receive similar treatments in the new year.

“We want to present the catalog as it was intended to be, with no compromises,” Reznor said of the planned re-releases. “That means a careful remastering of the audio from the original sources, a painstaking recreation of the artwork, pristine materials, some surprises and an insane attention to detail.”
