New York streetwear label Supreme now has an official Slayer collection

Whenever a genre or style of music gets popular enough, you can bet that people and companies with zero interest in the music itself will begin co-opting aspects of it whether for monetary gain or ‘cool points.’ The attempts by mainstream America to understand/make millions off of grunge (with hilarious results) is an excellent example, and now metalheads are the ones left rolling their eyes. I mean, when women’s fashion mag Harper Bazaar names wearing a metal t-shirt ‘the look of the summer,’ you know things have gotten pretty dumb (just ask James Hetfield). But this has also brought about another unexpected trend – metal bands willingly teaming with fashion labels to create official collections. And while you might think it would be metal-light bands jumping on that opportunity, the big news this week is that Slayer is coming out with a high-profile collab.

As you can see in the ad, Slayer frontman Tom Araya has been repping Supreme shirts for a while now, while the label has partnered with musicians before, having Morrissey and Neil Young (seriously) model their clothes, this collaboration with Slayer might be their most extensive yet and will feature jackets, shirts, knit sweaters, hoodies, and sweatpants. At least they won’t be half-assing it: prints will include the infamous pic of a fan’s arms with the band’s name carved into them.

If you’re not familiar with streetwear, it basically consists of casual and semi-casual hip-hop or skate-inspired clothes that are pretty well made and stupidly overpriced (hey, how about this Supreme plaid shirt for the low, low price of $138?). So while these pieces do look pretty dope, don’t expect to be paying regular merch prices for them. They go on sale at the end of the week, so you’ve got a couple days to dig deep into that piggy bank and get in line.
