Marilyn Manson plays an emotionless sociopath barber on Salem.

If you ever need to cast the role of an occult barber who travels between the worlds of the living and the dead for your TV show about witches, you could do a lot worse than shock-rocker/Denny’s cage fighter Marilyn Manson. Just ask the producers of Salem.

In a new interview with Rolling Stone, everyone’s favourite Eurythmics cover artist reveals he’ll be playing a character on Salem, WGN America’s supernatural drama about the 17th century witch trials and accompanying hysteria. Manson’s character, Thomas Dinley, is a demonic barber with knowledge of witchcraft who “has to deal with all of the things that witchcraft has caused and can’t fix.” So, basically the Carlton of the show, is what I’m getting.

“My character comes in and becomes this person that nobody can really figure out. They kind of fear him, I think, because he’s pretty utterly sociopathic and emotionless,” Manson says about his role. Weird, that kind of describes his character in the show as well.

Manson has already had a pivotal role in Salem since its inception: that of theme song composer. His Pale Emperor track, “Cupid Carries a Gun,” has served as the show’s theme song since it debuted in 2014.

Also important to note: as part of his character, Manson put a live leech in his mouth… but sadly wasn’t allowed to swallow.

“I was a little disappointed that the leech handler wouldn’t let me be a little bit rougher with them,” Manson said. “I wasn’t technically allowed to swallow it. So we will agree to disagree to agree that there is a leech in my mouth that did not necessarily get eaten.” Marilyn Manson, everybody.

The new season of Salem premieres tomorrow (November 2).
