The brothers Gallagher were offered a spot on the iconic Trainspotting soundtrack, but not knowing what the title meant, turned it down.

At this point, it’s fair to say that the Gallagher brothers aren’t the sharpest tools in the shed, but even we couldn’t help but be taken aback by this latest bit of news: Apparently, Oasis were offered a spot on the iconic Trainspotting soundtrack, but turned it down because Noel thought the movie was about literal train spotters.

“I met Noel [Gallagher] at a thing the other week,” said Trainspotting costume designer Rachel Flemming, “and he said to me ‘I would have done something but honestly I thought it was about train spotters. I didn’t know.’”

Trainspotting is, as is well known, not about people watching trains. A much celebrated interpretation of Irvine Welsh’s book of the same name, deals with the pratfalls of heroin addiction in Edinburgh, Scotland, and gets its title from the term “trainspotting,” which Welsh says was a term locals used to describe shooting up when he was a kid.

As for the soundtrack, Oasis did fine without it, but Trainspotting’s “Music from the Motion Picture” was so wildly popular that it spawned a spinoff second edition. Between both volumes, artists like Iggy Pop, Blur, Pulp and Joy Division were featured.
