SPOILER ALERT: He hasn't.

Today in Sad: a dude who sincerely thought he was talking online with Katy Perry for six years gets a reality check.

Catfish the MTV show — which, if you recall, stems from a 2010 horror movie documentary that earnestly asks you to sympathize with a dude with a tailbone tattoo — follows the modus operandi of the movie, in that it seeks out people who are being lied to online by other people and tries to get to the truth. Tries is the operative word here, because mostly Catfish just serves as a showcase for tailbone tatted host Nev Schulman and co’s all-consuming narcissism and pithy ‘wisdom’.

Anyway, on this week’s episode, Nev and his cronies talk to Spencer from Tennessee, a man who thinks he’s been in a lengthy online relationship with pop megastar Katy Perry. Spencer trusted her when she repeatedly claimed she was really Perry, and even spent a quarter of his life savings on a ring for his beloved.

This dude might not be the sharpest tool in the shed, or even be in proximity to a shed.

Of course, Katy turns out to be a Canadian woman named Harriet living in London, and has the gall to laugh at the credulity of man she’s spent years duping and emotionally destroying.

You know you want to check out a clip from the episode below:

Yep, that follows the script, alright.

P.S. why is the movie/show called Catfish? I mean, I know the reason the producers call it that – because catfish (online tricksters) keep regular old fish (gullible fools) on their fins/toes – but it still doesn’t make that much sense. Why not Tatfish?
