It's a sharp turn for the "Banana Phone" singer.

Washington Post may have once called him “the most popular children’s singer in the English-speaking world,” but to the millions who grew up on his music, he’s just their beloved Raffi; the man who once sang to them about his hella-sweet banana phone.

What many don’t know is that the Egyptian-Canadian singer’s lower profile from the late 90s onwards wasn’t because of his declining popularity – Raffi made the decision to return to his folk roots with environmentally and socially-conscious tunes. Unfortunately, the public wasn’t buying it (literally and figuratively) – and apparently still aren’t, as evidenced by the response to his recent track “Wave of Democracy.” Flying well under the radar with 5,000 YouTube views, the tune was inspired by Bernie Sanders’ Presidential run.

In Raffi’s own words:

“The world needs the America that Bernie Sanders envisions, a nation for the people—fair and just. Fighting climate, not endless wars. A nation that honours its young, nurtures their families, and earns the respect of the global community. Here’s to a wave of democracy: a spirit of dedication, engagement, and democratic action. Here’s to voting in a progressive era of responsible government and sustainability.”

Raffi’s been battling hard for environmental change, even partnering with David Suzuki, so if you’re the eco-conscious type, you may want to reconnect with the former kid’s crooner. As for his ode to Sanders, “Baby Baluga” it ain’t, but if you’ve missed his comforting voice it might be the nostalgic fix you need.

Thanks to 12:36 for the heads up on this. We don’t know how we missed it (okay, we do), but we’re happy to relish in its bittersweet vibes during the heat of the DNC.
