The ex-Oasis frontman says the Beach Boys are 'for people who wear glasses.'

Recently, Sir Paul McCartney shocked the music world by coming out and admitting that his former band Wings weren’t quite as good as his other former band, The Beatles. Well, he actually went a little further and admitted that Wings – the band he formed in 1971 with his late wife Linda McCartney who won the 1975 Juno for International Album of the Year – were “terrible” and not “a good group.”

Wings abuse is nothing new, but to hear it from Macca himself is a bit startling. It’s been a few weeks already (sadly timed with the passing of guitarist Henry McCullough) and McCartney has yet to retract the damning statement, so he probably means it. But not every one agrees with him.

Noel Gallagher, who is perhaps the world’s biggest Beatles fan (see his old band, Oasis), is also a fan of Wings – or at least he is of their classic 1973 album, Band On The Run. Ahead of his upcoming Canadian dates with the High Flying Birds – Ottawa’s Bluesfest on July 8, the Montreal International Jazz Festival on July 9, and Toronto’s TD Echo Beach on July 10 – next month, Gallagher spoke to AUX and shared what he thought of McCartney’s comments, which, of course, snowballed into something else entirely: a verbal takedown of the Beach Boys.

AUX: How do you feel about Paul McCartney calling Wings “terrible”?
Noel Gallagher: I think Band On The Run is fucking brilliant, and they did some great stuff after that. I’ve got Band On The Run, and that is probably the only Wings record that I own, and I’ve got various singles after that. Even if his Highness says Wings weren’t that good, they still made one fucking great album and that’s enough.

I’ve never been much of a Beatles fan.
Well, isn’t that bizarre? Are you a musician in any way? I think if you played an instrument it might unlock something. Because once you learn to play those songs you’re like, “Fuck! They really are amazing.” But I know people who don’t like the Beatles. Let’s call them “fucking idiots.” They prefer the Stones. My wife she prefers the Stones to the Beatles.

Like your wife, I prefer the Stones too. But out of that era the Beach Boys were my favourite.
You see I fucking do not get the Beach Boys at all! I’m better than the Beach Boys! They’ve only got fucking six good tunes. I’ve got 16! They’ve got “Good Vibrations,” “Wouldn’t It Be Nice,” “Sail On Sailor”…

“In My Room”?
That’s fucking shit! It’s for people who wear glasses.

I wear glasses.
Well, exactly. I rest my case. “How She Boogalooed It,” that’s four. There must be another two.

“Kokomo.”
[Laughs] Get the fuck out! I tell you what though, saying that, even though I think they are the most vastly overrated band in the history of popular culture, I will say that “Good Vibrations” is in the top two singles of all time. After “Strawberry Fields.” [The Beach Boys] were only popular because in the record stores back in the day they were beside the Beatles. Because both bands were listed under ‘BEA.’ So they were literally side-by-side. And Paul McCartney liked them. That’s it.
