20 fans will be lowered 400 feet underground into a volcano with the Deftones vocalist.

Pop quiz: if you could pick one recording artist to see perform inside a volcano, who would it be? Hot Hot Heat? Norwegian jazz-rockers Lava? Mumblecore cinema king Mark Duplass’ old indie outfit Volcano, I’m Still Excited!!? Don’t worry about it: A festival in Iceland has made that world-first decision, and they’ve gone with… Deftones frontman Chino Moreno?! Where’s the thematic consistency? Well, at least it’s better than Snow Patrol.

As part of the Secret Solstice festival in Reykjavik, Iceland this weekend, Moreno and 20 fans will be lowered 400 feet underground into the magma chamber of the Thrihnukagigur volcano, where Chino will perform an acoustic solo set, hopefully including “Hole In The Earth.” Sound dangerous? It might be, if the last time Thrihnukagigur erupted wasn’t an estimated 4,000 years ago. Still, 4,000 years is like, 20 minutes in volcano years, so who knows what could happen. Though, if worst comes to worst, being consumed by lava as Chino launches into “My Own Summer” sounds like a pretty badass way to go out.

The 20 tickets for the event ran the world’s most committed Nordic Defheads about $2,000 USD, and include helicopter transit from Reykjavik, the hot show, and “refreshments inside the magma chamber.”  No word if escape from the dormant volcano is included with ticket purchase, however. “Hey, no ins and outs!” – bouncer hanging from a branch at the top of the caldera.

The Secret Solstice festival runs June 16-19th, and will also include performances from Radiohead, Action Bronson, Die Antwoord, and many more. Last year, the fest hosted two performances inside a glacier, so of course they had to try and outdo themselves this time.
