Def Leppard will meet students from the Arkansas School For The Deaf, whose mascot is the Leopard.

Online petitions have the power to do anything: get an element named after Lemmy, halt the return of Phil Collins, or resurrect Bowie. Well, I mean, they didn’t actually cause any of those things to happen, but they did get people talking and clicking, which is what really matters.

This time, though, things are different: nearly 1,500 people signed a Change.org petition to have British hard rockers Def Leppard visit the Arkansas School For The Deaf, whose mascot is the Leopard. It’s actually going down today. Or, wait – it would be, but Def Leppard’s schedule doesn’t allow for them to actually make it to the school.

Nevertheless, Def Leppard is still meeting the Deaf Leopards – they have agreed to conduct a meet and greet with a few students at their performance in Little Rock this evening, where they’ll be taking a photo with a replica of the school’s scoreboard. Still, in terms of an online petition effecting real action, this is one for the books.

“We’re so proud for anyone to shine a light on our school, on deaf education and on the work we do here,” said Stacey Tatera, the spokesperson for the Arkansas School for the Deaf. The school has used the name ‘Leopards’ since 1941, long before the advent of pouring sugar on people and pristine, ultra-slick glam production techniques.
