Bowie was set to reprise his role as FBI agent Phillip Jeffries in David Lynch's cult classic.

Do you have complicated feelings about Twin Peaks returning to TV and melting into your every waking thought? The critically splooshed over David Lynch co-created series is earmarked for a 2017 return, and while an impressive percentage of the original cast (plus Trent Reznor and Eddie Vedder) are onboard for the new run, it turns out one planned return will not happen.

David Bowie, who played FBI agent Phillip Jeffries in the companion film Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me, was intended to make an appearance in Showtime’s new batch of episodes. This revelation bubbled up in an interview the Dallas Morning News conducted with returning co-star Harry Goaz (a.k.a. Deputy Andy Brennan). The actor shared that a Bowie cameo was planned, although for obvious reasons it didn’t happen.

According to Goaz, filming Twin Peaks again was a significant emotional experience.

“It was magical, heart-wrenching and very tearful at the end. For everyone,” said Goaz. “David [Lynch] doesn’t really direct actors so much as he paints with them. So, in that comes a lot of trust that you relinquish to him wholeheartedly… To be able to go back to that 25 years later is amazing. We have a very maternal, psychic connection.”

You’ll be able to evaluate the strength of that maternal, psychic connection at some point in 2017.
