The late Scott Weiland, Linkin Park’s Chester Bennington, and now... Scott Stapp?

UPDATE: Stone Temple Pilots have swiftly shut down Scott Stapp’s comments about joining their band:

If you thought Axl Rose fronting AC/DC was sacrilegious, prepare to get upset or overjoyed, depending on your appreciation of donkey rock.

Following the December death of co-founder Scott Weiland and the departure of Linkin Park’s Chester Bennington, Stone Temple Pilots launched a public search for a new singer. According to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution and Creed frontman Scott Stapp himself, he is now “all-but-confirmed in his role as the new frontman of STP.”

Stapp is currently making the promotional rounds for a solo tour and stopped by Atlanta radio station Rock 100.5 to give an interview. There, he could “neither confirm nor deny” that he’s officially the man to take them higher, but did offer the following hints:

“I’m excited to be back out on the road also been working on a new album with a new group of guys. Guys from some pretty well-known rock bands that you guys will know. I can’t really share the details about it but there’s a lot of good things going on that I can’t tell you till later in June when we’ll be making the announcement… This other band I’m jamming with is its own band with its own band name.”

When host Jason Bailey speculated that the band in question was Stone Temple Pilots, Stapp gave the following cryptic response:

“I will tell you this, there is a six-degree separation connection between this new project and the band you mentioned.”

Finally, Bailey mentioned that Stapp was using the same tour bus that Weiland died on, to which he replied:

“Dude, you are just on point, aren’t you?”

The Creed singer has recently struggled with his own confused and self-destructive behaviour stemming from bipolar disorder, so we’ll have to wait and see if the remaining members of STP will welcome Stapp with arms wide open.
