Barack Obama: expertly distracting the youth of the world with his pop culture acumen since 2008.

Having previously been outed as the lead singer of Korn, we assumed that Barack Obama possessed a preternatural beatbox/scatting ability, but we haven’t heard it on display publicly… until now.

During the final moments of a townhall-style event in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, Obama received a question from 26-year-old Vietnamese rapper Suboi about the role of art as regards international relations.

“I want to know how important it is for a nation to really help and promote their art and culture to help nations in the future,” Suboi asked the POTUS. In response, Obama offered up a canned platitude about how art inspires people from different cultures to connect with each other or whatever, but more importantly, he then briefly beatboxed in an effort to ascertain Suboi’s skill level. Er, sort of — catch his attempt 0:50 seconds into the video below.

OK, so maybe his beatboxing isn’t that high-level.

Suboi also spoke about the challenges of being a woman in hip-hop, saying that the stereotype in Vietnam (and, let’s be honest, the world) is that “rapping is not for girls”. “That’s true in the United States too. There’s always been sexism and stereotypes in the music industry like every other part of life,” Obama replied. Mmm, that’s good platitude!
