The J-Pop metal trio enter the Mushroom Kingdom.

Last time we checked in with Japanese karaoke/gimmick-metal trio Babymetal, they were heart-signing their way into the eternal metal Necronomicon, or at least the “huh, that’s weird” part of every metalhead’s brain. Now, their extremely kawaii campaign continues on a new front: video games.

As of today, Yuimetal, Su-Metal, and Moametal are official, playable characters in Nintendo’s Super Mario Maker, the construction kit/social game in which players can construct and share their own Mario levels.

Building your own Mario levels has long been a dream long shared by 10-year-olds and 10-year-olds at heart the world over, so it’s no surprise that the game has been a massive success for Nintendo. The slew of special costumes and downloadable content available for the game speaks to that popularity. You know your product is successful when a costume set based on a gimmick band seems like a viable financial proposition.

The “Mystery Mushroom” costume will combine the members of Babymetal together into one sprite, which will periodically call out catchphrases from the band’s songs when you perform different actions. Check it out in action above.

This isn’t the first time Babymetal have made the foray into the video game world, either: their song “Gimme Chocolate” was a recent piece of downloadable content for Rock Band 4.

No one knows the power of pop culture/video game mashups quite like Japan. Expect to see a Sailor Moon Bejeweled clone on the iOS store any second. Oh, wait.
