Kick, Push and also some punches.
Hip-hop and video games go together like Mountain Dew and Doritos: Snoop is a confessed gamer, Big Boi was in Army of Two, Wiz Khalifa sampled Chrono Trigger… and that’s not even touching on stuff like Blood on the Sand or Def Jam: Fight for NY.
Lupe Fiasco might have outdone them all though with his latest unlocked gaming achievement: Taking on legendary Street Fighter champion Daigo Umehara at an SF5 launch event in San Francisco, the rapper somehow ended up winning 3-2.
Now, no one can question Lupe’s gamer credentials (after all, where’s your Metal Gear Solid “Never Be Game Over” custom jacket?) but many fighting game aficionados are finding it hard to believe a casual enthusiast could actually pull off a victory over the world’s most famous and skilled player. Did Daigo intentionally play down to Lupe in order to give viewers a better exhibition match? Probably. Note: if you’re actually steamed that casual observers might conclude Lupe is a better fighter than Daigo you might be taking things too seriously.
Watch the whole thing below, and decide for yourself if Daigo was playing to the best of his ability:
All hail the new king of the streets:
