Get ready to hear “Why Don’t You Get A Job” in a Workopolis.com ad soon.

There’s an excellent documentary called One Nine Nine Four that focuses on the lead up to and effects of the pop-punk explosion of 1994 when bands like The Offspring and Green Day took over the record charts. In the 2009 film, the musicians reminisce about a time when nobody playing punk ever considered the possibility of making real money.

More than 20 years after releasing the best-selling independent album ever (1994’s Smash), that time no doubt already seemed fuzzy to the members of The Offspring – but it may have been completely wiped from their memories as the band recently sold the rights to their catalogue for a cool $35 million.

As reported by Billboard, New York’s Round Hill Music made the monster acquisition, which gives it ownership of the band’s Columbia masters as well as publishing control of the tunes from their Epitaph days (Smash, and preceding releases). Though Round Hill is only five years old, they’ve aggressively pursued high-value catalogues, shelling out some serious cash (about $100 million) in the process. Round Hill chairman and CEO Josh Gruss explains:

“We have some masters like the Bush catalog and records from developing artists like London Souls and Nigel Hall, but we wanted more exposure and you won’t get a more high-quality catalog than The Offspring.”

Offspring lead singer Dexter Holland was (unsurprisingly) equally giddy, referring to Round Hill Music as “the right caretakers” of their catalogue and adding the music acquisition company “understands that we are continuing to perform and record and that the visibility of our past is critical to our future.”

We’ll resist the temptation to make any “Come out and Pay,” “they’re looking ‘Pretty Fly’ right now” or any other puns, and just say here’s hoping we don’t see “Why Don’t You Get A Job” pop up in a Workopolis.com ad in 2016. And hey – Dexter can definitely afford that third plane now!
