No Rest for the Obsessed is a column spotlighting some of the most exciting new music AUX’s Associate Editor Jesse Locke finds each week. It began in 2010 for Calgary’s dearly departed alt-weekly FFWD, and takes its name from a Lightning Bolt song.

Nap Eyes – “Mixer”

Nap Eyes’ 2014 album Whine of the Mystic is a heart-stirring Haligonian classic for the ages. Following its original release on Plastic Factory Records, the band has linked up with Paradise of Bachelors and You’ve Changed, and now pour one out from their follow-up Thought Rock Fish Scale. With a spacious backdrop minimizing their usual Yo La Tengo-esque guitar glimmer, “Mixer” allows the sleepy musings of singer Nigel Chapman to take centre stage. Though most people can relate to the feeling of being an introvert at a house party full of “pretty girls and guys” not everyone would be thinking about Jesus, meditation, and the mall while wondering if they’re “really here.” I’ve compared this song to Prefab Sprout before (in the most complimentary way possible), and I’m not going to stop now.

Vulva Culture – “Human Garbage”

Earlier this week, we debuted a series of videos from Halifax’s Vulva Culture and director Heather Rappard. In this perfectly matched collaboration, all four songs from the band’s dreamily melancholy In Vain EP are set to the intimate actions of a “gothic slumber queen” (their wonderful words). “Human Garbage” is the climactic moment of action featuring sandwich preparation and devouring from video star Melanie Hill. So nice we decided to share it twice.

Mykki Blanco – “Coke White, Starlight”

The Cosmic Angel a.k.a. Betty Rubble a.k.a. Mykki Blanco returns with another wig-flipping video. This seven-minute drug dream from director Tristan Patterson steps up to the 2012 classic “Wavvy” in the cinematically trippy category. When the song kicks in at the same time as the opium drops, Blanca Donna dolls up for hunting season off the coast of Greece and swims underwater to stab an octopus. To be continued…

Soupcans – “Crimes 1”

If you’ve ever sucked at skateboarding, this one’s for you. Toronto pigfuck punks the Soupcans just dropped their latest album Soft Party on Telephone Explosion with this quick-hitter video filmed at Ashbridges skatepark. After bailing on everything, a lanky longhair tries to focus his board with the help of a garbage can, his hat, and a soft drink. Listening to this gnar shredder might make you want to do the same to your computer or phone.
