Other nominees include The Smiths, The Cars, Chic, Cheap Trick, The J.B.'s, and Yes.

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame’s class of 2016 has been announced with a line-up that should please/piss off classic rock fans, goths, hip-hop heads, funk freaks, and proggers in equal measure.

The full list of candidates is Nine Inch Nails, N.W.A., Janet Jackson, The Smiths, The Cars, Chic, Cheap Trick, The J.B.’s, Yes, Deep Purple, Chaka Khan, Chicago, Steve Miller, Los Lobos, and The Spinners. If somebody can get these famous faces in a room together, it could make for a photo-op on the level of David Bowie’s 50th birthday.

According to the Hall of Fame’s official rules, an artist’s first single or album must have been released in 1990 or earlier. That’s 25 years ago if you feel like experiencing the ravages of time. The grungers over at Alternative Nation have pointed out that Soundgarden, Alice in Chains, and Jane’s Addiction are three notable snubs in their first year of eligibility. Nirvana made the cut in 2014 with their debut single, a cover of Shocking Blue’s “Love Buzz.” If you’re a Pearl Jam stan reading these words and preparing to fire off an angry comment, stop now: They’re not eligible until 2017, as their debut album was released in August 1991, four months after the cutoff.

Toss your two cents into the “fan’s ballot” to determine the top five Hall of Famers for 2016. The polls are open now until December 9th at the Rolling Stone website.
