The Foo Fighters were kicked off the show for refusing to play an old song.

The Foo Fighters’ HBO Obama-featuring documentary miniseries, Sonic Highways, won two Emmys on Sunday night, for Outstanding Sound Editing and Outstanding Sound Mixing respectively. You don’t say, the music doc series took those awards? Truly an unexpected outcome. To celebrate, Dave Grohl and company were all set to perform one of the new songs featured on the show, but apparently Emmy broadcaster Fox had other ideas.

According to TMZ, the network was adamant that the Foos play half of a Sonic Highways track and then segue into their 1999 hit single “Learn To Fly.” The band, apparently as disenchanted with that song and the memories of the Airplane! parody it conjures up as the rest of us, decided they’d rather not tarnish the sterling artistic reputation of the Foo Fighters and demanded that they get to get the play the Sonic Highways track in full. Fox was less than accommodating, apparently booting the band from the show entirely.

While unfortunate, look on the bright side, Foo fans: this is a stirring rally cry for anti-medley activists everywhere. The revolution will not be televised, on Fox anyway.
