The mullet, bowtie, and Van Halen cover are all proof this is 1987.

Before landing his spot on the Foo Fighters throne (no, not that one), the storied career of Oliver Taylor Hawkins included stints with Sass Jordan and Alanis Morissette. He can be seen keeping time with the farty bass tone in a black tank top and shades in the video for “You Oughta Know”. Yet eight years before swallowing the jagged little pill, 15-year-old Hawkins was already killing it on the kit.

A 1987 video has now re-surfaced with the future Foo taking part in a Battle of the Bands at his Laguna Beach High School. Alongside the fringe jackets and massive feathered hair, this impressive cover of Van Halen’s “Panama” features Hawkins behind a Neil Peart starter kit with two bass drums, four rack toms, and approximately 17 cymbals. Despite looking like a blonde Captain Planet with a bowtie, he easily steals the show with his furious fills. Maybe the drummer was at the wrong gig.
