In the early 1990s mixtapes entrenched a place in underground music culture. But at the turn of the millennium piracy and music sharing would change the record business forever. Mixtapes have disappeared but the spirit of the mixtape is alive and well in how new music is shared digitally. It has become clear that mixtapes are part of the new normal.
