Firth was also a celebrated timpanist of the Boston Symphony Orchestra.

Everett “Vic” Firth passed away in his Boston home on Sunday at the age of 85. The cause of death was pancreatic cancer, according to a spokesman for his family business, Vic Firth Inc. A statement has also been issued on his Facebook page:

Vic was an inspiration to all of us. He was a visionary, a mentor, a leader and a friend. He always said he surrounded himself with the best people, but the truth is he brought out the best in all of us. His boundless passion for music and musicians drove every decision he made.

An obituary published by the Boston Globe shares more information about Firth’s life and career. From 1956 to 2002, he performed as the principal timpanist of the Boston Symphony Orchestra. In the 1960s, Firth designed and developed his signature drumsticks, which quickly became popular enough to launch his eponymous company. In 2010, Vic Firth Inc. partnered with cymbal and percussion equipment company Zildjian. They now produce 12 million drumsticks per year.
