This June, the band will release Freedom, their first album since 1998's The Shape of Punk to Come.

We never thought we’d see the day. But after influential Swedish hardcore band Refused reunited for a globe-trotting tour in 2012—their first shows in 12 years following their breakup in 1998—fans were given a glimmer of hope that the band would amenable to making new music. Then, the unthinkable happened: The band announced they’d parted ways with guitarist Jon Brännström, hinting that the band was becoming active. Then, they plotted a handful of shows in 2014. Next, a series of dates were announced with Faith No More.

And now, we have our first new Refused song in nearly 20 years. Even better: It’s part of a new album called Freedom, which will be the long-awaited follow-up to the influential The Shape of Punk to Come. The album will land in June, accompanied with a 28-page hardcover book.

In a statement, singer Dennis Lyxzen stated that Refused are back for good.

It’s not a reunion anymore. This is one of the most radical things we’ve ever done, both musically and lyrically.

Our first verdict? Rhythmically, it’s almost Tool-esque, and Lyxzen doesn’t quite shred his vocals like on “New Noise.” But right as a drumroll explodes into “Elektra”‘s chorus, it’s clear that this is vintage Refused. Listen to the track below.
