While musicians can seem impossibly huge onstage, plenty of them are wee, little people, just like the rest of us. Prince, for example, has cultivated magical, white-tiger riding aura, so it may surprise some that the accomplished basketball player is only 5’1″. (It may also surprise people that Prince-esque walking tongue piercing Dave Navarro is 5’8″.) Flea, meanwhile, may play some towering slap bass, but he’s only 5’6″. Thom Yorke uses a greying manbun to accentuate his 5″7 frame. Hard rock titan Angus Young is 5’2″. Indeed, rock ‘n’ roll has been plenty friendly to the little guy.

Of course, that hasn’t stopped certain stars from being sensitive about their height. For one, Bruno Mars—who, at 5’5″, clears Paul Simon easily—has found ways to make himself seem larger. Though he’s five inches shorter than legendary Toronto Raptor Damon “Mighty Mouse” Stoudamire, Mars says that he wears large hats to make him seem more imposing.

Via NME, he told The Daily Star:

I’m a short guy, and that’s aways something I have to think about. I’ve always done the hat thing. Now I’m doing ones with bigger brims to make myself look taller.

He also added that his mother blow-dried his hair to be puffier, in order to add an extra inch or two. We’ve all been there, Bruno.

Of course, there’s nothing that’ll make a tiny man feel larger than having a massive hit single. Laugh it up, tall people, but you get back at us when you’ve contributed to a banger like “Uptown Funk.”
