If we’re to believe Twitter, in Toronto, there’s only one current story bigger than Ghomeshi, and it involves Prince. Namely, the rumour that Prince is playing two secret shows at Massey Hall tonight (or, depending on who you ask, tomorrow). At first glance, the details seem to line up: The Purple One played Saturday Night Live over the weekend, placing him hours from Toronto. Massey Hall, for its part, has vacancies until November 6, when Sarah McLachlan plays. And after a marriage with his now-ex Manuela Testolini, Prince was said to have owned a $5.5 million home in the Bridle Path. He has a relationship with Toronto, even if he hasn’t played Hogtown in a few years.

So, rumours began swirling yesterday that he’d be playing shows at Massey Hall. By this morning, it’d reach a fever pitch, with lineups stretching whole city blocks. And everyone from BlogTO to the Star to the Toronto Sunwith one outlet—Global—running a headline that affirmed the fact. (“Prince to perform surprise show in Toronto,” they wrote.)

But now, things have changed, with organizers telling the hordes to go home. So, after all the buzz, we’re left with a single question: Is Prince trolling Toronto? Let’s look at the timeline of events.

First, after hearing rumours from multiple sources that we weren’t able to officially confirm that Prince was playing a show in Toronto, we sent out this cryptic tweet.

Then, Prince’s band tweeted this early this morning, seemingly confirming the fact.

That tweet, as mentioned, was deleted. But by the morning, things had reached fever pitch, especially when Ticketmaster released a link selling tickets, which was subsequently removed.

By midday, there was no stopping the rumours: Tickets were supposedly to be sold for $10, which prompted a lineup of scalpers and the unemployed (jk jk jk) at Massey Hall. Reportedly, it stretched all the way to Queen St.

Those in the media surely believed Prince was coming, even sending vans out to cover the event.

Indeed, there was a crush of humanity on Yonge St. But then, LiveNation abruptly announced that—despite the serious, serious rumours—a Prince show wasn’t happening.

Of course, this isn’t over. Massey Hall, after all, doesn’t have a show tomorrow. And by all accounts—including what Josie Dye tweeted, below—Prince was intending to play Toronto.

So, will Prince actually be playing Toronto tomorrow? Or is this an incredible troll job? Will, we, as the Animianiacs did, find Prince?
