Every year, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame incites controversy with its list of prospective inductees. Usually, the reaction comes from the rap is crap contingency, who this year will find their blood boiling with word that the innovative, cop-hating hip-hoppers in N.W.A. are getting another shot and could be in the Hall by 2015.

But the rest of the nominees for next year’s class is definitely more in line with what stone tested rock ‘n rollers are expecting—The Smiths, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Nine Inch Nails and Green Day, the latter two of which are the only nominees getting the nod in their first year of eligibility.

Also on the list are Sting and Lou Reed, two artists already in the hall with the Police and the Velvet Underground respectively. Joined by influential German krautrockers Kraftwerk, the list is rounded out with Chic, Joan Jett & the Blackhearts, the Paul Butterfield Blues Band, The Marvelettes, the Spinners, War, and Bill Withers.

From now ’til December 9th, fans can vote on Rolling Stone to help build the final ballot. Come on, rocker dudes—give rap a chance!
