After days of speculation and rumours, the CBC announced today in a statement that it had ended its relationship with host Jian Ghomeshi, putting an end to their 12 years together.

“The CBC is saddened to announce its relationship with Jian Ghomeshi has come to an end. This decision was not made without serious deliberation and careful consideration. Jian has made an immense contribution to the CBC and we wish him well.”

This comes on the heel of rumours sparked Friday, when media critic Jesse Brown reported on Twitter that Ghomeshi would be taking an indefinite leave of absence from the network.

Browns report was quickly denied by later denied CBC spokesperson Chuck Thompson, though it was later reported by the Canadian Press that Ghomeshi would be taking an “undetermined leave.” Ghomeshi later wrote that he was “okay” and just “taking some much needed personal time.”

Ghomeshi, says the Toronto Star, is allegedly suing the CBC for $50 million.

This marks the end of an era in Canadian broadcasting. Ghomeshi has yet to comment on the news. We’ll update this story with details as we learn them.
