Vancouver-based electronic duo Sabota took plenty by surprise with their self-titled debut, issued on Hybridity—so much so, in fact, that there were whispers that it’d be in contention for the Polaris Prize. For good reason: The duo of Max Ulis—a veteran of Vancouver’s dance underground—and Humans vocalist Robbie Slade produce lush house that’s inspired by disco but entrenched in modern house. The result? Tracks that are sophisticated enough for the headphones, placid enough for home-listening purposes, but with sturdy grooves built for the dancefloor.

Named for a stretch of road in Nelson, B.C.—where the locals go to party—Slade and Ulis say their music is made for outdoor spaces, which explains why they’re playing forward-looking, greenery-filled outings like Bass Coast and the Tall Tree Festival. Check out their Scion Sessions video for “Don’t Ask,” the opening track from the Sabota LP, above.

The video comes through Scion Sessions’ continued support of Canadian electronic label HybridityMusic. Sabota was recently featured on Scion Sessions’ double 12″ compilation featuring Hybridity’s impressive crop of emerging and established artists.

You can stream the full compilation here (or, handily, below).
