Here’s the latest track from Calgary spooky-voiced multi-instrumentalist Chad Van Gaalen called “Monster,” from his forthcoming album, Shrink Dust (out April 29th on Flemish Eye). The LP, his fifth full-length, is partially a score to his forthcoming animated film, Translated Log of Inhabitants, but it’s also—in Chad’s view—a country record, produced by Van Gaalen himself at his Yoko Eno home studio in Calgary.

“Monster” has Van Gaalen experimenting with a recently acquired pedal steel guitar, a sound which unifyies the album, along with themes of death, transformation, fear, benign evil, and the eccentricity of love. A newfound affection for The Flying Burrito Brothers and the sci-fi mysticism of The Incal, a graphic novel by Alejandro Jodorowsky and Moebius, were also significant influences in recent years.

With that in mind, take a spin of “Monster.” Pay attention to transformative lyrics about his skin changing and his fingers falling off only to be replaced by talons, as you sway back and forth to its spooky campfire feel.
