This week’s track of the week comes by way of Wye Oak—it’s their latest single “Glory,” off their upcoming release of Shriek, out April 28th.

Wye Oak‘s Jenn Wasner and Andy Stack have been playing music together in Baltimore for most of their lives. Known for their energetic, sophisticated live performances, the duo create 21st Century folk music, which is, in their words, “imbued with dense shoegaze guitars, nearly melodic rhythms, and impeccable splashes of electronic colour.”

Following extensive touring in support of their critically acclaimed 2011 release Civilian, the two found themselves apart for the first time. Andy had recently moved to the west coast, and simultaneously but separately, the two began exploring new ways of writing.  Jenn picked up the bass, Andy began to explore different ways of layering keyboards. The freedom of these new methods allowed for a newfound emotional immediacy. In spite of (or perhaps because of) the distance, Wye Oak have recorded what they feel is their most personal album yet.

If repeat listens to “Glory” is any indication of their new direction, I’m looking forward to hearing the new record.
