Yo. It’s been a pretty busy year for hip-hop, hasn’t it? With new albums from Kanye, Jay Z, and Drake dropping, it could be tough for some comparably under-the-radar projects to get some shine when Blog Nation cobbles together year-end lists. Don’t forget that Pusha T released his DEBUT record this year, ok? On that tip, don’t forget the El-P and Killer Mike connected in 2013 for a partnership that could rival Clipse one day.

But the Internet overlooking the biggest clunkers of the year isn’t an issue, because, well, turds float. Even though Kendrick’s “Control” verse had the entire rap game second-guessing their bars in August, there’s still a buffet of laughable lines for us to sort through. And I’m not talking about the obvious missteps, either. Ricky Rozay’s rapey “U.O.E.N.O.” verse and Weezy’s wildly ignorant Emmett Till reference were both (rightfully) stricken from each song’s masters, and while those are two of the unequivocal worst lyrics of the year, I’d rather not give them the acknowledgement of a Photoshopping. Let’s not forget it pissed everyone off, but also, stay buried, shitty ignorance. Even though it’s titled The Worst Rap Lyrics Of 2013, this list is born out of love. Many of these lyrics (and lyricists) walk the line between brilliant and brutal, and to be honest, it can be tough to pinpoint where each stands. I hate using the “it’s so bad it’s good” defense for hip-hop, but it probably applies a few times here.

It remains to be seen if “Control” will usher in a new era of lyrical rap, but at least things don’t seem quite as bad as last year. And for the record, Kendrick’s lucky I didn’t roast him for his verse on that bullshit Robin Thicke song. (There’s a fine line between “doot-doot” and “doo-doo,” K-Dot). These 20 lyrics from 2013 had us laughing, cringing, or ideally, both.
