Lou Reed has died, and nearly 24 hours after the world learned of the legendary New Yorker’s passing, it still hasn’t settled. That’s because for all of his quirks—the grumpiness, Lulu—Reed was an innovator beyond compare. With the Velvet Underground he taught us that noise was more than an accident, and for the next forty years went onto experiment, invent and grate the status quo. From Transformer to Metal Machine Music, Lou Reed’s solo work ran the gamut of sounds both good and bad, but whatever the case, each release stood on its own merit.

The cause of Reed’s death hasn’t yet been released, at least not officially, but it’s expected that he suffered complications stemming from a liver transplant he underwent in May. At 71, Lou Reed’s death came out of nowhere. He leaves behind a discography that even long after his passing will continue to challenge. Lou Reed was a visionary. A poet, an artist and for it all, a legend. He is sorely be missed.

Rolling Stone first reported his death, and they’ve done quite an impressive job at eulogizing him. Head there for more information.
