Progressively inclined metal heads are patiently awaiting Mastodon’s next probable masterpiece, and today comes some short but sweet news from the band that says we could be hearing new songs sooner rather than later.

“MASTODON has been busy jamming everyday writing and arranging the next studio album. we have quite a few songs and ideas that are taking some time to nail down what we think will make it to the next full length. there will be no more touring this year, we will hit the studio in November to hopefully finish by the end of year.”

When we talked to drummer Brann Dailor earlier this summer, he confirmed that the band had been whittling down from a massive collection of written material, working towards something he described simply as “dark.” With the update hoping to have the album done by the end of the year, that puts a likely release date somewhere in Spring 2014 with our first recorded sample hopefully hitting the digital airwaves by February. But as these things go, you can never be sure.

Mastodon last released The Hunter in 2011.
