Fall Out Boy sessioned 8 or 9 "punk rock" songs with Ryan Adams

From their work with everyone from Elton John to Lil Wayne, it’s no secret that Fall Out Boy love to collaborate. But their newest one might bridge the gap between sounds new and old, with Pete Wentz telling Rolling Stone that the band is working with Ryan Adams on “punk rock,” calling the eight or nine songs they’ve written so far “the stuff that makes you want to kick the shit out of your bedroom at your parents’ house.”

The collaborative session apparently happened because of Butch Walker, the band’s super-producer friend who’s worked with them since 2007’s Infinity on High.

Wentz went onto call the experience a throwback, adding that it reminded him of the band’s early days in guitarist Joe Trohman’s parents’ place.

“We played loud and Patrick was singing live vocals, so it was very raw,” he said, and while we’re not clear on the distinction behind Patrick Stump singing “live vocals,” we’ll still take his enthusiasm as a positive.

Of course with Ryan Adams comes the caveat of if and when we’ll hear this. He’s prolific to fault but even then has been known to sit on material. Fall Out Boy meanwhile are burdened by the kind of major label pressure that leads to anonymous sideprojects and burned bridges. Still, Wentz seems cautiously optimistic.

“I would hope that somewhere in some universe you could put out a seven-inch and kids still care,” he says. And kids do still care. They just happen to be kids with beards and families and full time jobs.
