In keeping with his grassroots, frat-folk, Birken-jam legend status, Dave Matthews played the part of transient hippie hitchhiker this weekend, when his bike tire popped while en route to a Dave Matthews Band concert.

Shortly before a scheduled tour stop in Hershey, Dave Matthews was spotted stranded roadside by two fans who were en route to the concert. Emily Kraus and her boyfriend pulled over to assist the toe-tappin’, scat-spoutin’, acoustic-totin’ tumbleweed, who explained that his bicycle was broken, and he doesn’t have a cellphone. That’s right guys — Dave Matthews doesn’t own a cellphone. Hippie status: legit. The fans happily gave the appreciative Matthews a ride to the show, and he obliged them with a little conversation, an autograph, front row seats, back stage passes, and a dinner invitation.

The takeaway here is that the next time you see a grizzled, hitchhiking hobo roadside, he might actually be a multimillionaire just trying to get his funky groove on, maaaaaan.

Check out Kraus’ account of the encounter via the CBS 21 Facebook page, and watch Dave give Emma a bizarre shoutout that kind of sounds like a Cosby impression via the YouTube embed below. Jump to the 1:10 mark for the hippin’ and the hoppin’ and the bippin’ and the boppin’. JAM ON, DAVE!
