As if a gaggle of Twitter users lamenting the lack of drops on Random Access Memories wasn’t enough, here’s further evidence proving that Daft Punk could not be more divorced from the contemporary EDM movement.

As if a gaggle of Twitter users lamenting the lack of drops on Random Access Memories wasn’t enough, here’s further evidence proving that Daft Punk could not be more divorced from the contemporary EDM movement.

In a recent interview with NME, Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo admitted that they’re a little confused by this whole “EDM” craze. When pressed for his thoughts on the recent rise of the genre, Guy-Man admitted that he doesn’t know many EDM artists or albums, and that at first he “thought it was all just one guy, some DJ called EDM.” When asked if he thought that because it all sounds the same, he replied “A little bit, yeah!” with Bangalter adding a cheeky hypothesis: “Maybe it’s just one guy called Eric David Morris.”

Later in the interview, Bangalter and Homem-Christo told NME that they “don’t listen to a lot of electronic music.” When pressed for an opinion on EDM DJs like Deadmau5 and Skrillex, they said they “wouldn’t listen to Deadmau5 for pleasure,” but have “a lot of respect for” Skrillex. Despite the fact that he cites Daft Punk as a huge influence, the robots don’t think that Skrilly is copying their formula.

No wonder there aren’t any drops or wubs on Random Access Memories — Daft Punk didn’t want to be accused of stealing DJ EDM’s signature formula.
