In the mid-nineties, Compton-born rapper Artis Leon Ivey Jr., professionally known as Coolio, rose to prominence on the strength of singles like “Fantastic Voyage” and “Gangsta’s Paradise.” And if we’re being honest, his hair probably had a lot to do with it, too. Coolio’s goofy gravity-defying braids were always a staple of his image, so you’ve gotta wonder if his upright ‘do is still going strong now that he’s 49 years of age.

TMZ recently brought a photo of modern-day Coolio to our attention, but it’s under rather unfortunate circumstances. Coolio allegedly brought another woman home to the house he and his girlfriend share, and when his girlfriend protested, he punched her in the face and proceeded to hit her with his car.

Does this bit of information make it OK for us to laugh at Coolio’s mangled braids? Yes, absolutely. Check out a couple of recent photos below, including his antler-esque up ‘do, and his Princess Leia-themed mugshot. Stay classy, Coolio.
