A lot can be said about R. Kelly: that he’s a bit nuts, that he ruined Trapped in the Closet by buying into the joke. But in spite of it all, the guy can sing. Unfortunately he chooses not to on a new song he wrote and recorded for the survivors of the Newtown school shooting.

Is that him whispering in the background? Yeah, probably, but “I Know You Are Hurting” is otherwise dominated by a children’s choir singing a few simple lines about hurting now but hoping for tomorrow.

The track is on sale now on Amazon and iTunes, with proceeds reportedly going to benefit the victims of the shooting.
