In what appears to be a totally-not-racist inside joke taken just far enough, members of Bay Area punk band Great Apes have reggae-ized two classic songs from seminal New York City punk band Jawbreaker.

Shockingly not titled UNIRIE, When It Pains, It Roars, Mon includes the reinterpreted “Hotboxcar” and “Bad Weed, Dealer’s Fault,” which feature approximately 3000% more upstrokes and Jah-sprinkled lyrics than the original songs, “Boxcar” off 24 Hour Revenge Therapy and “Bad Scene, Everyone’s Fault” off Dear You. The release is also said to be part of an upcoming split with 311, which is totally a nice touch.

In an interview with AMP Magazine last month, Great Apes singer/guitarist Brian Moss had this to say about the project:

“Jahbreaker is a bad party joke come to fruition. A while back Rob and I were hanging out and started bouncing around the idea of how ridiculous reggae, rasta themed Jawbreaker covers would be. Halloween and all of the punks out there with absolutely no sense of humor provided sufficient motivation. Chesterfield Kingston Town. When it pains it roars, mon. So stupid…”

Inject your afternoon with some chilly groovy island riddims, via the band’s Bandcamp player below. Bless!
