There’s no better snapshot of Lana Del Rey’s career than the new video for “Ride,” a ten minute short film that hooks you from start to finish in spite of the fact that nothing really happens.

There’s hints of a plot throughout: that she’s a lady of the night, that she hangs out with bikers, that maybe some people have gotten hurt along the way. But in the end, the Anthony Mandler directed clip is ten minutes of Lana looking sad, pouty, pretty and little else. But as always, she makes it work.

Whether spread on a pinball table or standing tall on stage, she’s written something here that won’t win over sceptics but should do wonders to remind fans what they fell for in the first place, even if it does essentially play like an extended perfume commercial. If the song sounds new to you, it’s going to be on the deluxe “Paradise Edition” of Born to Die when it hits stores in November.
