Similar to last year, Wiz Khalfia drops some free shit mere weeks before his major label release. This strategy has self-sabotage written all over it but the radio-friendly Rolling Papers debuted at #1 on the Billboard 200 last April while the trap attack that was Cabin Fever continued to rack up free downloads. Even though the two projects were true Wiz Khalifa records, they were specifically directed to different tastes. Rolling Papers featured polished pop-tinged cuts that played to Wiz Khalifa’s softer side, Cabin Fever banged hard and permeated arrogance. Instead of ramming all his best tracks on one disc, he opted to split them up into two cohesive projects and give (the better) one away. Genius.

He’s apparently trying it again with this mixtape, Cabin Fever 2, as O.N.I.F.C. waits in the wings. The best thing about the Cabin Fever sequel is that it matches up better with the Wiz Khalifa classic Kush & Orange Juice than its predecessor. Chilled-out, hazy cuts like “Pacc Talk,” “Deep Sleep,” and final track “Nothing Like The Rest” (which includes yet another charmingly garbage chorus from French Montana staking his claim for worst singer in history) drive the project as Wiz makes it look easy on yet another impressive mixtape. The tone of Cabin Fever 2 completely throws off expectations for O.N.I.F.C. as precedent suggests that he’ll completely flip everything for his next release.
