In 2009, a pair of potheads got together and did a mixtape called How Fly. At the time, both Curren$y and Wiz Khalifa had garnered the favour of the blogs. The tape dropped and everything changed. Dame Dash hunted Curren$y down and locked him in the studio with Ski Beatz, spawning the awesome Pilot Talk duology, while Wiz, well, he became WIZ KHALIFA. They’ve since been focusing on their own blossoming careers until a new duet tape, Live In Concert, was announced this past spring and set for an August 9 release. Everybody lost their shit in vain as sample clearance issues stalled the tape. After three months, the initial excitement for Live In Concert has turned into hope that it will eventually drop. It’s a bit of a downer but there’s music to keep us distracted. Wiz dropped Cabin Fever 2 this month and now Curren$y, surprising as usual, drops Priest Andretti.

It’s more of the same from the self-proclaimed Hot Spitta as he delivers his signature cool-ass conversational raps with a few genius lines sprinkled in (i.e. “These niggas fakin’ they’re ready, forgetting their lines on set/Don’t know how to play their role, they’re more inclined to play themselves” on “For Season”). A stand-out is the Harry Fraud produced “Payroll” that thrives on Curren$y’ perma-laidback vibe with its organ, flute, and bongo samples. Young Roddy, a member of Spitta’s Jet Life team, turns up and compliments his mentor as well as anyone can. Maybe these two should rock a project together; at least we’d hear it.
