Music pirates like to argue that illegal downloading is almost justifiable given the notion that most artists aren’t turning a huge profit from album sales. They argue that musicians make their money from ticket and merch sales, meaning it’s okay to download if you buy something else later. Greg Puciato, singer of the Dillinger Escape Plan, disagrees.

In a post written on his site yesterday, he says one is separate from the other.

“Do whatever you want… but the root is the music. THAT’s the most important…not a shirt. They are separate. We’re not forcing anyone to buy our music or our shirts,” he says. “If you want one, that’s separate from the other. Nobody’s doing us a favor by buying our shirt after they took our album.”

He goes onto say that there’s “no excuse for bankrupting a scene or band you’re into anymore,” adding that it’s easier than ever to grab an album on iTunes or to stream it on Spotify.

Puciato was answering a fan qusetion and makes some solid points in his response, and unlike some of his previous rants he keeps things pretty calm. Check out his entire response here.
