In August, we told you about a posthumous Aaliyah album that was in the works with Drake at the helm. But now its future is very much in doubt as frequent Aaliyah collaborators Missy Elliott, Timbaland and DMX have all spoken out against the direction of the project.

On a Monday radio interview, Elliott revealed that she still has yet to be asked to take part, and stated that Aaliyah may not have wanted the unfinished music that will be spiffed up for the release to see the light of day. “”We don’t know what [Aaliyah’s] reasoning [was] for not putting those records out. Maybe she felt like they weren’t her best work.” She went on to say that until she had the blessing of Aaliyah’s family, she wouldn’t consider involving herself. Timbaland added that he also was not taking part, as was previously believed, and didn’t even know if the album was still happening. Fun!

DMX had harsher words for Drake: “Your balls ain’t that big, son.” And DMX has been to prison, so he’s well familiar with other guys’ genitalia. Having connected with Aaliyah while filming the martial arts romance Romeo Must Die and featured on her song “Come Back In One Piece,” Dark Man X felt that if some of her closest creative partners weren’t being asked to contribute, then it shouldn’t be done at all. “You’ve been given the opportunity to do the Aaliyah album, yet you don’t include anybody that she worked with personally. How do you just go there with it?” Moreover, how do you just go there with it when there’s the threat of DMX hog-tying you and beating you with a baseball bat?

So unless Drake is able to pull this project together, and unless this project is actually, uh… still a project, it appears Aaliyah fans looking for new material will have to content themselves with the only track Drake’s been able to pull together: “Enough Said.”
