The caustic half of the Lawrence Arms’ duel-voiced punk dirges, he recently released I’d Rather Die Than Live Forever under the moniker Brendan Kelly and the Wandering Birds. It’s a marked departure from a career spent mostly in the trenches of midwestern punk; a dark, slow, and strange record about all manner of murderous evils. An amplified version of the storytelling nature of Kelly’s past songs, it feels like an honest extension of a man who doubtlessly loves to spin a good yarn — whether it’s about fatherhood or meeting a porn star at the aquarium.
