Mariah Carey’s comeback single “Triumphant (Get ‘Em)” demands an equally triumphant visual treatment for its music video. With that in mind, Carey’s husband Nick Cannon has directed a clip that slots in nicely with the illustrious music video archetype of boxing-themed clips.

There are tons of music videos that feature the artist slugging it out in the boxing ring. Adam Levine stars as a professional boxer in Maroon 5’s “One More Night.” The Fresh Prince, Christina Aguilera, Ashlee Simpson, and Nicki Minaj have also put on the gloves in their own music videos.

There’s one major difference with Mimi’s clip for “Triumphant”; her role is reduced to the chesty ring girl who walks around holding the sign indicating what round of the match it is. Meek Mill is the fighter, while Rick Ross sucks on a cigar and wears a giant fur coat, like some kind of Don King boxing manager impresario-type.

Overall, it’s a little disappointing. It would have been cool to see Mariah light someone up in the ring, fighting for her own comeback, instead of sicking Meek (“Get ’em, Meek!”) on her figurative opponents. Overall, Meek Mill and Rick Ross overshadow Carey in the video and in this mix of the song. Luckily, there’s another mix of the single sans Maybach, which lets Mariah’s voice do the fighting.

Mariah Carey has signed on to be a judge on the upcoming season of American Idol, alongside Nicki Minaj. There’s still no word on a release date for her new album, but you’d better believe she’ll be promoting it on Idol this season, J-Lo style.
