In an interview with Rolling Stone, Rick Ross has finally opened up about the long-standing rumour that he was a corrections officer prior to becoming a rapper. Despite the threat of this news ruining his credibility—Rick Ross’ lyrics are aggressively focussed on his life in the drug trade—Rozay has finally spoken openly about it.

According to Ross, he took the job after his best friend was booked for ten years on a drug charge. His best friend’s father encouraged him to get a legitimate job, so it didn’t happen to him too. Read an excerpt of the interview below:

“This was my best friend, who I ate peanut-butter-and-jelly sandwiches with, and pork and beans with, my buddy, my partner, my number-one dude. Suddenly I’m talking to him over federal phone calls. Hearing the way it was building, I knew I couldn’t take nothing for granted,” says Ross.

“My homey’s father was a huge influence on my life, too . . . He was the one who was like, ‘Yo, go get a job somewhere, man. Go be a fireman. Or go be a fucking corrections officer. Just go sit down somewhere.”

Rick Ross must have been well aware that this news wouldn’t sit well with some people. Below you’ll find some Twitter reactions to the news. Some of these posts are from before the article was even published, so you know that it’s always been a hotly debated subject in the hip-hop community.
